Zanzibar Odyssey
Optional Extension to Wild Tanzania Safari

Retreating to a tropical island after your safari is a great thing to do, and exotic Zanzibar is the perfect place to do it. Join us for a five-day extension to this tropical paradise, rich in history.

Over the centuries, African, Arabian, Indian, Persian, and European cultures have blended to create the Zanzibar of today. We'll visit Stone Town and meander through its narrow streets, looking for the famous carved and studded doors. Known as the "spice island", Zanzibar is the logical place for us to visit a spice farm and coconut plantation. Finally, we'll end our odyssey at a small beach lodge set on a lovely white sand beach fringing a turquoise cove. How will you spend your two beach days? Reading a book while relaxing in a hammock under coconut palms? Snorkeling in the crystal clear waters? Deep-sea fishing in the Indian Ocean? It's your choice!

After spending the night in Dar es Salaam, we will take a short 20-minute flight to Zanzibar. Our Zanzibari guide will meet us at the airport and transport us to Tembo House, our beachfront hotel in Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This afternoon, we'll take a walking/driving tour of Stone Town. Wandering through the narrow streets, our guide will point out the carved and studded doors for which Zanzibar is famous and will explain the history and melding of cultures of this fascinating island. Watch the sun set over the Indian Ocean, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant, then wander through the quaint shops or Forodhani Gardens.
