Mahale Chimpanzee Trekking
Optional Extension to Wild Tanzania Safari

Extend your safari with one of Africa's most enthralling wildlife experiences: chimpanzee trekking in Mahale National Park. Here we will have an opportunity to venture into their forest home and spend time with some of Africa's most interesting primates. This is a rare opportunity to study the social interactions of these great apes.

Detailed Itinerary

September 21, 2009 - Monday
Today we will fly from Katavi to the airstrip at Mahale National Park. From the airstrip we will journey by boat to Kungwe Beach Lodge, our home for the next three nights. Overlooking the crystal clear waters of Lake Tanganyika, the world's longest, our lodge offers chimp trekking, forest walks, kayaking, and snorkeling. Of course, relaxing on the sandy beach is also a favorite option! For an additional fee, you may also try out some of Tanzania's best fresh-water fishing or take a scenic boat trip.
Lodging: Kungwe Beach Lodge. B, L, D

September 22 - 23, 2009 - Tuesday and Wednesday

Trackers will be out early in the mornings to locate the chimps. Once they have been located, we will begin our trek into the mountains. The time and effort needed to reach the chimps will vary, depending on their location. Our efforts will be rewarded, though, with the opportunity to watch the interactions of these fascinating primates. Of course, the Mahale forests are home to other primates as well: yellow baboons, red tail monkeys, colobus monkeys, and vervet monkeys share the chimps' home. If you like birds and butterflys, you'll be in heaven! Bush pigs, leopards, kudu, roan and sable antelope, and buffaloes are also found here.
Lodging: Kungwe Beach Lodge. B, L, D

September 24, 2009 - Thursday
Today, we will journey across the breadth of Tanzania to Dar es Salaam. As most international flights such as KLM depart in the late evening, we will be transported to the Slipway complex for a relaxing dinner before departure. There are several restaurants from which to choose and shops for last minute purchases.
En-Route: B, L

September 25, 2009 - Friday
Continue our international flight home to the USA.
